The Act of Thanking

Sometimes, in lines at the grocery store,
I imagine I hear whole stories like this:
Thanksgiving, this year was going to be tough. We knew that.
Nobody talked about it.
Then, the old man spoke up, “we are going to thank God,
the one the Bible is about,
for this meal to signify our thankfulness
for all we have not earned or designed.
This is not saying “grace”, this is saying thanks,
but, for real,
if you, in truth, believe there is no one to hear you thank,
why thank?
If you are too young to know,
may I say I am not too young to know
that counting blessings is more fun than counting
Facebook friends your cousins share.
Agree. Cellphones off.
Thank God. Kingdom come, we all say, amen.
